Divas began in 2007 as an experimental Machinima:
- a method of making animated film using software similar to that designed for making video and computer games.
- the genre of films created by machinima.
As one of the first of its kind, the running series featuring virtual avatars as characters in a progressive comedy series, it has since been written about in international educational textbooks including Machinima: The Art and Practice, New Opportunities for Artistic Practice in Virtual Worlds and Travel in the animation by Émile Raynaud.
DiVAS has also exhibited at The Museum of Natural History in Florence, Italy and the World’s Fair in Shanghai, China in 2010. Originally produced in a silent format similar to Charlie Chaplin films of early era cinema, it later transitioned to using voice actors to give the characters more depth and to punctuate comedic moments.
